The Power of Self Belief

Self-Belief in my coaching practice

Reflecting on my client base in 2020, I couldn’t but notice that the number one topic that came up in the coaching space regardless of what type of agenda the client came to me with, was self-belief.

At the core of self-belief is the realisation that you are the driver of your own achievements, accomplishments and ultimately your own success. We make choices and decisions all day every day, but how often do we stop to think about what is driving these choices and decisions? When our sense of self-belief is diminished, and we begin to doubt ourselves, we tend to give our power away to others and go with their opinions and their priorities in our decision-making process. This approach only serves to diminish our self-belief even further and certainly does not get us to where we want to go.

Working on self-belief

Working on and improving our self-belief, allows us the freedom to stand in our own power and not be swayed by the mob. It enables us to make decisions based on our own priorities and what matters to us. It also allows us to more easily identify and own our own individual strengths and skills. By practising owning our strengths and skills, we rewire the brain to think differently. We are now working on standing in our own power.

Are confidence and Self-Belief the same thing?

No, it is possible to show up with confidence outwardly in one area of your life but also to have a low level of self belief. A simple example may be a sports star or a singer. A singer may have full confidence in his or her singing ability and show up on stage with confidence in his or her performance but may have a low level of self-belief in him/herself as a person. The same can be said of a sports star. Working on self-belief is a little trickier and generally takes longer but ultimately no factor is more important in human psychological development than the value judgements they make about themselves. Every aspect of our lives is impacted by how we see ourselves. If you believe you are worthless then you won’t add value to yourself. Therefore working on your self-belief is the single most important step you can take in your personal development.

Self-belief is not about Continuous Success.

Self-belief is not about continued success, it’s about embracing the path, with all its ups and downs, and realising that each challenge brings new opportunities, new skills and new strengths. By breaking through our self-limiting beliefs replacing them with empowering beliefs that serve us, we allow ourselves the freedom to stand in our own power and offload the unhelpful baggage that we have been dragging along with us for years. All of a sudden, our career, life or business goals become much more visible and with that visibility comes the realisation that anything is possible with the right mindset.

My top 3 tips to work on your self-Belief

Watch your self-talk, that inner voice that continually tells you that you are not good enough.  Very often this comes from childhood so it takes effort to reverse it. Avoid the "I can’t, I'll never be able to, I'm not". Become your own encourager. Give

yourself a compliment when you achieve. When you make a mistake instead of justifying the inner critic in you, try something like 'it is all part of my learning'

Avoid comparing yourself to others. It serves only as a distraction. It is never comparing like with like so ELIMINATE it and only compare yourself to how you were yesterday or to how you did last week or last year.

Work on establishing your core values. Once you establish the top 5 core values that are really important to you, try bringing more and more of these into your life. For example, if courage is really important to you, try doing one courageous thing every day or if kindness is one of your top values try doing more random acts of kindness. What you will notice is that once you bring more of what is really important to you into your life, you automatically start to feel better about yourself and your level of self-worth and self-belief increases.

If you would like to work on your values or indeed your self-belief why not book in for your complimentary 20-minute discovery call where we can discuss how coaching can help you believe in yourself and gain the confidence to do what it is you really want to do with your one wild and precious life.
